WASHINGTON – President Trump said Friday he’ll “pass” on calling former Presidents Obama and Clinton who were targeted with mail bombs and declined to take blame for his rhetoric playing a role in inciting the attacks.

“I think I’ve been toned down, you want to know the truth,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House. “I could really tone it up because as you know the media’s been extremely unfair to me and the Republican Party.”

Trump said there was “no blame” and pointed out that the baseball shooting that targeted Rep. Steve Scalise and other GOP lawmakers was from “a supporter of a different party.”

Trump praised law enforcement for the arrest of a Florida man, Cesar Sayoc Jr., and said the media has been so focused on the mail bombs that it’s affected GOP turnout in the midterms.

“Now we have to start the momentum again,” Trump said as he headed off to campaign in Charlotte.

Trump declined to reach out personally to two of his presidential predecessors who were targeted by the mail bombs.

“I think we’ll probably pass,” he said.
