Republican front-runner Donald Trump on Saturday reframed his controversial comments that Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the unfolding 9/11 attacks, saying Muslims worldwide were overjoyed with the terror.

“People saw it,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Sarasota, Fla. “I made the statement . . . I thought everybody knew. Worldwide the Muslims were absolutely going wild.”

Trump had said that thousands of people in Jersey City cheered the devastation of the World Trade Center. But critics in both parties chastised Trump, and no evidence supporting his claims surfaced.

Trump cited a 2001 Washington Post article detailing law-enforcement officials questioning suspects who may have celebrated the attacks, but that story has since been corrected.
