Despite his war of words with outspoken soccer star Megan Rapinoe, President Trump said Friday that he hoped the US would win Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final in London against the Netherlands.
“I don’t know that I’ll be able to,” Trump told reporters outside the White House when asked if he planned to watch the game, adding, “I hope they do well. I hope they win.”
Rapinoe, a gay woman and activist who takes a knee during the national anthem, angered the commander-in-chief when she told a soccer magazine that “I’m not going to the f–king White House” should the team win and get an invite.

“Women’s soccer player, @mPinoe, just stated that she is ‘not going to the F…ing White House if we win.’ Other than the NBA … leagues and teams love coming to the White House. I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!” he wrote.
Syosset native and WNBA star Sue Bird, Rapinoe’s partner, then jumped into the act, writing an online essay titled “So the President F–king Hates My Girlfriend,” in which she asked Trump: “Like, dude, there’s nothing better demanding your attention??”
