President Trump in a Sunday tweet said the only way to provide critical border security is with an “old fashioned Wall” as a congressional standoff over his campaign pledge resulted in a partial government shutdown.

“The only way to stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into our Country is with a Wall or Barrier,” Trump posted on his account.

“Drones and all of the rest are wonderful and lots of fun, but it is only a good old fashioned Wall that works!”

The president, who campaigned on building a wall that Mexico would pay for on the southern border, has been locked in a battle with congressional Democrats over funding for the barrier.

Trump has pointed to the existence of a caravan of immigrants from Central America that he said contains criminals and gang members as evidence the country has to erect a wall on the Mexican border.

Backed by a number of Republican allies, Trump has said that he would not sign a budget unless it contains $5 billion for the wall.

But Democrats have said they would be willing to offer $1.3 billion for border security but no funds for a wall.

With the two sides at an impasse, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Saturday adjourned the chamber until Thursday.
