President Trump has begun mediating the deadly conflict between Cambodia and Thailand over a border dispute and demanded that the two sides reach a ceasefire to avert a full-blown war.
Trump revealed that he spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Saturday in an effort to broker peace and that the two “agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire.”
“We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting,” Trump announced on Truth Social Saturday.

Many people are being killed in this War, but it very much reminds me of the Conflict between Pakistan and India, which was brought to a successful halt.”
The president has given countries until Aug. 1 to negotiate lightning tariff deals or else face elevated customized tariff rates on their exports to the US above the 10% baseline.
President Trump is also planning to speak with Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai (above) in an effort to broker peace. APBut do to the conflict, Trump said it would be “inappropriate” to negotiate a tariff deal with the two countries until a ceasefire his reached.
“They are also looking to get back to the ‘Trading Table’ with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS,” Trump added. “When all is done, and Peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!”
Clashes between Cambodia and Thailand erupted on Thursday over the border between the two countries.
Both sides accused the other of firing first on Thursday, and it remains somewhat murky which country actually sparked the conflict.

Meanwhile, Cambodia has claimed that soldiers from Thailand shot at its troops first, during an encounter at Prasat Ta Muen Thom, an ancient temple both neighboring countries claim.
The two neighboring countries have had military skirmishes for centuries and the modern-day conflict traces its roots back to a 1907 map from when the French had colonial control over Cambodia.

Trump has sought to position himself as a peacemaker on the world stage and endeavored to end and prevent wars around the world, such as Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine.

Some analysts believe that the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand could be an opportunity for China, which is the top trading partner for the two countries.
Trump is currently in Scotland for a five-day “working visit” and to work on refining the tariff deal announced with the United Kingdom in May.
