Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called President-elect Donald Trump a “trustworthy leader” Thursday after a meeting at which Abe sought clarity on international trade agreements and US-Asian alliances.
“The talks made me feel sure that we can build a relationship of trust,” Abe told reporters after the meeting at Trump Tower.
The parley came amid Japanese anxiety about the future strength of an alliance that is at the core of its security. The nation is faced with a nuclear-armed North Korea and a newly assertive China.
The meeting also included Trump’s daughter Ivanka, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn.
