First lady Melania Trump made an appearance for the first time in nearly four weeks Wednesday that was open to the press.
“She’s doing great,” President Trump said at the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a 2018 hurricane season briefing, where he was joined by the first lady.
“She went through a little rough patch but she’s doing great.”
Trump added, “We’re very proud of her, she’s done a fantastic job as first lady. The people love you … thank you, honey.”
That remark brought a loud round of applause.
Melania made her last public and press appearance on May 10, just four days before undergoing a procedure for what her office called a “benign kidney condition.”
On Monday, she joined an event at the White House for Gold Star families that was closed to reporters.
She did not speak at the event Wednesday.
A new Quinnipiac University poll found the first lady is more popular than any of a half-dozen top White House officials surveyed, including Vice President Mike Pence, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
Forty-nine percent of voters viewed Melania positively and only 17 percent negatively, according to the poll.
“First lady Melania Trump might have the best favorability rating of anyone in or close to the White House, similar to Michelle Obama’s favorability in 2010,” said pollster Tim Malloy.
