President Trump referred to the Mexican president as his “friend” – before insisting the southern country was still on the hook for the border wall as the two leaders met for the first time Friday.

“It’s great to be with my friend the president of Mexico,” Trump said about President Enrique Pena Nieto during a meeting in Hamburg, Germany at the G-20 summit.

Asked at the meeting whether Mexico would still pay for the controversial wall, Trump answered, “Absolutely.”

Trump also said he and Pena Nieto made headway on trade issues between the two countries.

“We’re negotiating NAFTA and some other things with Mexico and we’ll see how it all turns out, but I think that we’ve made very good progress,” Trump said after the meeting.

Pena Nieto added that the meeting would “help us continue a very strong dialogue” on NAFTA.
