President Trump is considering naming Jim Webb, a former Democratic senator who served as President Ronald Reagan’s secretary of the Navy, his next Defense secretary, according to a report on Thursday.
Trump is looking at Webb, a former officer in the Marine Corps and a critic of the Iraq War, after he announced plans to withdraw US forces from Syria and reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan, the New York Times reported.
The commander-in-chief’s decision to pull out of Syria led to the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis, who offered a stinging rebuke to Trump’s foreign policy in his resignation letter.
Trump named Mattis’ deputy, Patrick Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, as acting Defense secretary.
Aides of Vice President Pence and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney have reached out to Webb.
