President Trump re-posted a tweet by conservative radio host Larry Elder on Sunday night that poked fun at a newspaper reporter who lost his job after he falsely claimed that the Capital Gazette shooter wore a “Make America Great Again” hat during the massacre.

“BEWARE! #TrumpDerangementSyndrome can be career ending,” the tweet said.

Elder fired it off Saturday in response to an article published by The Hill, which covered the resignation of Conor Berry, a former reporter at The Republican in Springfield, Mass.

Berry was forced to step down Friday after sparking widespread outrage with his statement about the Gazette gunman wearing a MAGA hat. He made the claim on Twitter Thursday not long after the deadly shooting took place.

“Shooter who killed 4 people at Annapolis newspaper dropped his #MAGA hat on newsroom floor before opening fire,” he said in a since-deleted tweet.

Berry later claimed that his journalism career “came to a screeching halt” Thursday as a result of what he wrote. The longtime reporter offered an apology to his colleagues and Trump supporters, saying his post was “stupid” and “regrettable.”

“It was a snarky, sarcastic, cynical remark, and there’s nothing I can do to take it back,” Berry told the Boston Globe.

On Twitter, Berry said: “My sincere apologies to all good, hardworking reporters and to POTUS supporters.”
