President Trump on Thursday touted his “Salute to America” celebration in the nation’s capital, saying that “perhaps Aircraft One will do a low & loud sprint over the crowd.”
“HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!” the president tweeted before predicting “what is turning out to be one of the biggest celebrations in the history of our Country.”
The all-day event at the Lincoln Memorial will culminate “with large scale flyovers of the most modern and advanced aircraft anywhere in the World,” the commander-in-chief said.
“Perhaps even Aircraft One will do a low & loud sprint over the crowd,” he added, later deleting the tweet and replacing it with one that identified the aircraft as Air Force One.
“Then, at 9:00 P.M., a great (to put it mildly) fireworks display. I will speak on behalf of our great Country!” Trump said.
Flights will be suspended at nearby Reagan National Airport from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. and then again later in the evening for the festivities.
Democrats have accused the president of staging a campaign rally, but the White House has said his remarks would not be political in nature.
“We’re going to have a great Fourth of July in Washington, DC. It’ll be like no other,” Trump told reporters this week in the Oval Office.
He downplayed the expense, tweeting on Wednesday: “The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth.
“We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door (Andrews), all we need is the fuel,” he added, referring to a nearby military base.
He added: “We own the tanks and all. Fireworks are donated by two of the greats. Nice!”
