President Trump on Friday claimed that a report on Russian election meddling from Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee put him in the clear.

“House Intelligence Committee votes to release final report. FINDINGS: (1) No evidence provided of Collusion between Trump Campaign & Russia. (2) The Obama Administrations Post election response was insufficient. (3) Clapper provided inconsistent testimony on media contacts,” Trump tweeted at 6:07 a.m., referring to James Clapper, the director of national intelligence in the Obama administration.

The Republicans’ report said the committee found no evidence of collusion between the president’s campaign and Russian officials, and that Russia meddled in the election but not on behalf of Trump.

Democrats on the committee scoffed at that interpretation — which contradicts the consensus of the US intelligence community that Russia in fact did try to help Trump and harm Hillary Clinton.

The House report — prepared by California GOP Rep. Devin Nunes, a staunch Trump partisan who served on the president’s transition team — also reached conclusions on issues that the Senate Intelligence Committee and special counsel Robert Mueller are still investigating.

But it aligns with the president’s oft-stated argument that there was no collusion, and that the Russia probe is a “witch hunt,” “fake news” and a ”hoax” cooked up by Democrats, the Justice Department and media to undermine his election victory.
