President Trump on Wednesday said the woman killed during a white nationalist rally in Virginia will be “remembered by all” as a memorial service was being held for her.
“Memorial service today for beautiful and incredible Heather Heyer, a truly special young woman. She will be long remembered by all!,” he wrote on Twitter.
Heyer, 32, was killed Saturday when a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters in Charlottesville as white supremacist groups, including the KKK and neo-Nazis, rallied against a plan to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park in the college town.
James Alex Fields Jr. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in her death.
Trump, during a news conference on Tuesday at Trump Tower, said Fields did a “horrible, horrible, inexcusable thing.”
But the president admitted he hadn’t spoken to Heyer’s family.
“I will be reaching out,” he said.
At the news conference, Trump also created a firestorm of controversy when he equated the actions of counter-protesters with those of the white nationalists during Saturday’s “Unite the Right” rally.
”You look at both sides. I think there is blame on both sides. I have no doubt about it,” the president said.
