With the race for the White House entering the homestretch, Donald Trump has taken a 1-point lead over Hillary Clinton among likely voters, according to a poll released Tuesday.
The Republican tops his Democratic rival, 49 percent to 48 percent, in a two-way race, according to the CNN/ORC poll.
The slim margin is the best showing in six weeks for Trump, who leads Clinton, 45-43, when the poll includes Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson (7 percent) and Green Party nominee Jill Stein (2 percent).
A month ago in the same poll, Clinton was enjoying a big bounce after the Democratic convention and had a 9-point advantage among registered voters.
Trump got a smaller boost from the GOP convention, emerging with a 3-point lead after it ended July 21.
In a worrisome sign for Clinton, Trump holds a 20-point lead — 49 to 29 percent — among independents in the latest poll.
Clinton shrugged off the results.
“I really pay no attention to polls. When they are good for me — and there have been a lot of them that have been good for me recently — I don’t pay attention,” Clinton told reporters on her campaign plane.
“When they are not so good, I don’t pay attention. We are on a course that we are sticking with.”
But Trump posted the numbers on Twitter with a note: “Thank you! #America First.”
