President Trump threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canada Saturday as he tore  into Prime Minister Mark Carney for angling to make trade deals with China.

Trump said Carney, who he mockingly called “governor” was naive to think he would get the better of China.

“China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social.

“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” he added.

And there will be a price to be paid if it moves ahead with any deal with China, warned Trump, who  slapped a 35% tariff on Canada in August.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the president wrote.

On Tuesday, Carney pushed back on Trump’s effort to acquire Greenland in remarks at the confab of world leaders and global elites.

“The old order is not coming back. We should not mourn it,” he said. “Nostalgia is not a strategy.”

Carney traveled to China and met with  Chinese President Xi Jinping during a Jan.14-17 visit, where the two leaders announced deals to bring more Chinese electric vehicles into Canada at a reduced rate.

Trump sounded sanguine about the move a week ago, when he said, “That’s what he should be doing. It’s a good thing for him to sign a trade deal. If you can get a deal with China, you should do that.”

Trump’s pivot indicates he fears China will use Canada to get more goods into the US, as he also threatens to tariff China over its trade practices and policy moves.

On January 12 he threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all countries that trade with Iran, in a move that threatened to reignite a trade clash with China, whose global trade surplus hit a record $1.2 trillion last year.

Trump’s comments are the latest in an escalating clash with Carney, who previously headed the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada. Last week, Trump removed Canada from his new “Board of Peace” following Carney’s slams at his foreign policy posture.

“Canada lives because of the United States,” Trump countered at Davos. “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney responded Thursday.

Trump began his term speaking about making Canada the 51st US state, but spoke less about it after Carney was elected PM in April. Trump had earlier clashed with Carney’s predecessor,  Justin Trudeau, who he also called  “governor” on occasion.
