President Trump is threatening to cancel next week’s planned meeting with his Mexican counterpart because the US’ southern neighbor is pledging not to pay for a border wall.

“The U.S. has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico. It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers of jobs and companies lost. If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting,” Trump said in two tweets Thursday morning.

The threat from the commander-in-chief comes a day after Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said in a nationally televised address that his country won’t be paying for the wall.

“I regret and reject the decision of the US to build the wall,” Peña Nieto said Wednesday.

He was slated for a Jan. 31 visit with Trump.

In a TV interview that aired Wednesday night, Trump reiterated his key campaign pledge that the US would build a wall that would be paid for by Mexico.

Mexico will “100 percent” pay for the wall down the road, Trump told ABC’s David Muir.
