President Trump said Wednesday that he would talk to Americans about the worsening coronavirus during a live speech at 9 p.m.
“I will be addressing the Nation this evening at 9:00 P.M. (Eastern) from the Oval Office,” the president tweeted at 4:44 p.m.
The announcement came after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a pandemic and Team Trump was set to discuss new restrictions on travelers from European countries to fight the virus, sources told Reuters, as a top health official warned that the pandemic “is going to get worse” in the US.
The potential new measures could mirror a ban on travel imposed on foreigners who visited China in the prior two weeks, which was later extended to Iran, the news agency reported.
Advisories recommending Americans cancel travel to certain European countries are also under consideration, they added.
The virus has swept across the globe and is ravaging China, South Korea, Japan, Iran and Italy. The Italian government imposed even stricter conditions on its nationwide lockdown, its latest effort to contain the outbreak.
