Facing a drastically altered political landscape, President Trump declared “Big Victory” in the midterm elections Wednesday morning — even though the Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years.
“Received so many Congratulations from so many on our Big Victory last night, including from foreign nations (friends) that were waiting me out, and hoping, on Trade Deals,” the president said in a tweet.
“Now we can all get back to work and get things done!” he added, apparently buoyed that a blue wave did not materialize.
The Republicans gained seats in the Senate but ceded control to the Democrats in the House after several GOP enclaves flipped from red to blue.
Trump said GOPers who followed his advice succeeded.
“Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well. Those that did not, say goodbye! Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!” he said Wednesday morning.
The Democrats, whom Trump described as dangerous socialists in the run-up to the midterms, now have the ability to launch investigations into the president and stifle his agenda in the second half of his term.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders minimized the scope of the Democratic gains.
“Maybe you get a ripple, but I certainly don’t think that there’s a blue wave,” she told reporters, pointing to several early GOP victories Tuesday night.
As for Republicans retaining control of the Senate, she called it “a huge moment and victory for the president.”
