The president and First Lady Melania Trump brought flowers to the MedStar Washington Hospital where Congressman Steve Scalise was recovering from a gunshot wound on Wednesday night.

The White House said that Trump met with the doctors and spoke with Scalise’s wife.

Trump and the first Lady then sat at Scalise’s bedside.

“Just left hospital,” Trump tweeted after his visit. “Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape – but he is a real fighter. Pray for Steve!”

MedStar Washington said Wednesday that Scalise was critically injured and remains in “critical condition.”

Scalise was injured when a gunman opened fire at a Congressional baseball practice.
