President Trump continued his support of Brett Kavanaugh on Wednesday by saying voters are “angry” at the way Democrats are treating the Supreme Court nominee.
“I see it each time I go out to Rallies in order to help some of our great Republican candidates. VOTERS ARE REALLY ANGRY AT THE VICIOUS AND DESPICABLE WAY DEMOCRATS ARE TREATING BRETT KAVANAUGH!,” Trump wrote in a tweet. “He and his wonderful family deserve much better.”
The president made the comments the morning after he mocked Christine Blasey Ford, the California professor who accused Kavanaugh of sexually attacking her in 1982, during a campaign-like rally in Mississippi.
Trump made light of how Ford was unable to remember all of the details during the incident at a high school party.
“What neighborhood was it in? ‘I don’t know.’ Where’s the house? ‘I don’t know.’ Upstairs, downstairs? ‘I don’t know.’ ‘But I had one beer, that’s the only thing I remember,’” the president said as the crowd howled.
But his remarks were roundly criticized not only by Democrats but by Republican senators who could be swing votes in confirming Kavanaugh.
Sen. Jeff Flake called the comments “appalling.”
“There’s no time and no place for remarks like that. To discuss something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right. It’s just not right. I wish he hadn’t had done it,” the Arizona Republican told NBC’s “Today” show on Wednesday.
Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, told reporters: “The president’s comments were just plain wrong.”
