President Trump touted his environmental record during a White House speech Monday — declaring that he’d proven it was possible to have both a strong economy and a clean environment.
“A strong economy is vital to maintaining a healthy environment,” the president said. “Punishing Americans is never the right way to produce a better environment or a better economy. We have rejected this failed approach and we are seeing great results.”
Trump said America was a leader in providing clean drinking water, had slashed air pollution and was cutting carbon emissions, all while boosting industry, creating jobs and reducing regulation.
He defended his record and ripped Democrats for what he called wildly expensive schemes for the environment, such as the so-called Green New Deal.
“These radical plans would not make the world cleaner. They would just put Americans out of work and they put them out of work rapidly,” he asserted.
The commander in chief also riffed about the importance of forest management in preventing and containing forest fires.
But activists, including Sierra Club chief Michael Brune, were not impressed.
“[Trump] is the worst president in history for the environment,” Brune said.
