Donald Trump said Monday he was “happy” that London elected its first Muslim mayor and that the British politician would be an “exception” to his proposed ban on Muslims traveling to the US.

“There will always be exceptions,” Trump said in response to how the ban would affect London’s mayor-elect, Sadiq Khan.

Trump also said he was hopeful Khan would succeed as mayor.

“I think it’s a very good thing,” he said. “I hope he does a very good job because, frankly, that would be very, very good.”

Khan has been critical of Trump’s approach to Muslims and said he was concerned he would not be able to visit under a Trump administration.
