The White House doubled down on pushing Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, despite the likelihood he’ll fail his first hurdle in the Senate-confirmation process.
Pompeo doesn’t appear to have the votes to win approval in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — leading the White House to urge that the full Senate ignore the committee and vote on him anyway.
“The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in particular on the Democratic side, is not representative of the Senate as a whole. And if the munchkin Metternichs on the Foreign Relations Committee want to vote against Mike Pompeo, the Senate will set them straight,” said Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).
