WASHINGTON — President Trump claimed Wednesday that Iran is “negotiating on fumes” after Tehran wrongly thought they could “out-wait” his interest in ending the three-month-old war.

“I think it looks like they want to just make a deal. I don’t think they have a choice,” Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House. “… They thought they were going to out-wait me.”

Regional sources have told The Post for weeks that Iran was banking on the war’s relative unpopularity with Americans to slow Trump’s pursuit of ridding Tehran of its nuclear aspirations, as well as its supply of enriched uranium.

But Trump said Tehran had miscalculated, pointing to a months-long run of wins by his chosen candidates, including Ken Paxton in Tuesday’s Texas Senate run-off.

“You know, ‘We’ll out-wait him. He’s got the midterms,'” Trump said of Iran’s assumptions. “I don’t care about the midterms. Look at what happened last night. That was the prelude to the midterms.”

“People understand it: They know that, very simple, Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” he added.

Trump also pushed back on allegations that the that the conflict is taking too long.

“We’ve been doing this for a few months — Vietnam lasted 19 years, Korea lasted eight years, Afghanistan lasted many years,” he said. “They were all many, many years, and we’re into it for a few months, and I read about you people like, ‘What’s taking so long?’ But we’re in it, you know?”

The President also shot down any idea of the US lifting sanctions on Iran to entice them to the negotiating table, telling reporters that he will not make Tehran a financial offer at least until they are willing to agree to his demands.

“We’re not talking about any easing of sanctions or giving money — no sanctions, no money, no nothing,” he said. “We have control of money that they claim is theirs. We’ll keep control of that money when they behave properly, and when they do what’s right, we’ll let them have their money.”

“But right now, we’re not doing that, and one thing is not contingent on the other,” he added.

While the president still prefers a diplomatic solution with Tehran, he made clear that he’s only willing to wait so much longer before returning to the battlefront.

“Iran is very much intent, they want very much to make a deal. So far they haven’t gotten there — we’re not satisfied with it,” Trump said. “It will be either that or we’ll have to just finish the job.”

Trump’s remarks came soon after the White House denied reports of a draft memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran that originated with Tehran’s state media, calling the document “a complete fabrication.”

“This report from Iranian controlled media is not true and the MOU they ‘released’ is a complete fabrication,” the White House’s Rapid Response 47 X account said. “Nobody should believe what Iranian state media is putting out. FACTS MATTER.”

The reported memorandum claimed the US had proposed withdrawing all its forces from around Iran and dropping its naval blockade of Iranian ports in exchange for Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring non-military traffic to pre-war levels in 30 days.

It further alleged Washington had agreed to allow Iran and neighboring Oman control the strait after it reopened — a claim contrary to repeatedly stated US and global demands that the passage be considered an international waterway owned by no nation.

“They’re just going back to the internet because they’re getting clobbered,” Trump said of Iran. “Their economy is in free fall. They have 250% inflation. Their money has no value. Their whole economic system is broken down.”

“The Navy is gone, as I’ve said 1,000 times, and Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone — everything’s gone, and they’re negotiating on fumes,” he added.

Despite the bogus Iranian state media reports, Trump said he believed US negotiators were “doing very well” in their dealings with Tehran through mediators.

“I think they’re starting to give us the things that they have to give us, and if they do, that’s great, and if they won’t,” he said before indicating Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, “the man on my left is going to finish them off.”
