The White House has been in discussions with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about rescheduling President Trump’s second State of the Union address, which will not take place Tuesday, according to a report.
Mercedes Schlapp, the president’s director of strategic communications, told CNN on Monday that “we should have a response soon.”
In dueling letters last week, Pelosi asked Trump to postpone the address until after the government shutdown ended, citing security concerns — but the president rejected that, saying he was going to do it anyway because the Secret Service and Homeland Security officials assured him they could handle the event.
Pelosi then informed him Wednesday “that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until government has opened.”
Trump tweeted later that night that “this is her prerogative” and that he would give his address when the shutdown was over.
“I am not looking for an alternative venue for the SOTU Address because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber,” he added.
On Friday, Trump announced that a deal had been struck to end the 35-day partial government shutdown, the longest in US history.
Pelosi still stood firm, declaring at a news conference: “The State of the Union is not planned now.”
