The minute hand on the famed “Doomsday Clock” may be moving forward as a result of Donald Trump’s presidency and fraught relations between Russia and the US, among other things.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists – the group that controls the symbolic clock that represents a countdown to possible global catastrophe – said Wednesday that it will host a live international news conference Thursday morning to announce whether the minute hand on the clock will be adjusted.
“Factors influencing the 2017 deliberations regarding any adjustment that may be made to the Doomsday Clock include: a rise in strident nationalism worldwide, President Donald Trump’s comments on nuclear arms and climate issues, a darkening global security landscape that is colored by increasingly sophisticated technology, and a growing disregard for scientific expertise,” the group said in a news advisory.
The Doomsday Clock is currently at three minutes to midnight – where it has been since 2015.
Midnight on the clock represents “doomsday.”
