WASHINGTON — National GOP leaders began their victory dance Sunday ahead of Election Day, as polls showed them poised to take back the Senate.

“The wind’s at our back,” crowed GOP Sen. Rand Paul on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think this election is going to be a referendum on the president.”

Nate Silver of the numbers-crunching Web site FiveThirtyEight predicted that the GOP’s chances of winning the Senate are now 72 percent and growing.

“Signs look fairly poor for Democrats,” he told ABC’s “This Week.”

The GOP needs to gain six seats to win control.

They’ve all but locked up West Virginia, Montana and South Dakota. They’re also favored to pick up red-state Arkansas.

There are then eight remaining toss-up states: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Colorado, Alaska, Louisiana, Iowa, Kansas and Georgia.

The Democrats are trying to energize their base in swing states by appealing to African-American voters and tapping technology to get out the vote.
