Pope Francis on Wednesday allowed visitors to kiss his ring during his weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square — days after video of him yanking his hand away from the faithful went viral.
The pope let priests and nuns smooch the papal bling after footage from Monday showed him pulling his hand away from Catholics as they attempted to plant the kiss during a visit to an Italian pilgrimage site.
The move drew criticism from some conservative Catholics who thought the pope may be breaking Catholic tradition.
Defenders of the pontiff noted, however, that the video did not show the entire story. Francis only began pulling his hand away after greeting a number of people — and he still had to lead a prayer and greet sick people.
On Wednesday, the pope showed no such discretion.
He presented an 85-year-old nun, Sister Maria Concetta Esu, who had worked to deliver thousands of children during her career in the Central Africa Republic, with a medal during his audience.
“This is a sign of our affection and thanks for all the work you have done among our African sisters and brothers in the service of life, of children, of women and of families,” Francis said.
Esu then knelt beside him and kissed his ring.
