PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland’s mayor has warned protesters camping at the office of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to disband before they are removed by police.
Portland Mayor Ted WheelerAPThe Oregonian/OregonLive reports Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Monday that protesters should peacefully disengage because although he supports their cause, he believes the demonstration is no longer sustainable.
A camp sweep notice says people have until Tuesday to leave voluntarily.
The notice says those who remain may face citation or arrest.
The activists, who have been protesting at a building leased by ICE since June 17, want to abolish ICE and end the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy.
The office closed temporarily because protesters blocked its entrances, and several demonstrators were detained and charged with misdemeanors when federal agents moved to reopen it.
It wasn’t immediately known if the protesters plan to leave.
