A pregnant woman said she was body-shamed and turned away from a Washington restaurant because her outfit violated the health code.
Charisha Gobin took to social media after she visited a Marysville steakhouse Sunday night sporting a black crop top that showed her pregnant belly.
“I was just denied service at the Buzz Inn on State Avenue in Marysville for my outfit,” she wrote on Facebook. “I’m violating the health code.”
Gobin was told that the restaurant had a “no shoes, no shirt, no service” policy.
“The waitress/bartender stopped us and said, ‘I’m sorry, you can’t be here in that shirt.’” Gobin told news station KIRO. “I said, ‘Are you being serious with me right now?’ And she said, ‘Yep, you can’t be here.’”
The expecting mom said that she felt that she was singled out because her “belly was bigger and sticking out.”
“But had it been anyone else, I don’t think there would’ve been any problem whatsoever,” she said.
The Buzz Inn said in a statement that the employee was “trying to use her best judgment.”
“We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding and will cover with all staff as to how to not overly enforce a rule that is intended to make all guests feel comfortable,” the statement said. “Our apologies for the misunderstanding.”
