Prince William said it was “very difficult” to walk behind Queen Elizabeth’s coffin during the procession earlier this week because it reminded him of his mom Princess Diana’s funeral.
The Prince of Wales, 40, made the comment Wednesday to an emotional Brit who was in the crowd watching the Queen’s cortège, according to the Sunday Times.
“Don’t cry now, you’ll start me,” he reportedly said.
William was just 15 in 1997 when his mother died. He and his brother both participated in her funeral by walking behind her coffin, in a service reminiscent of Queen Elizabeth’s.
“I’m learning that she was everyone’s grandmother — the way people have reacted,” he also told a member of the public, the Times reported.
Kate, the Princess of Wales, also told a crowd member that their eldest child, Prince George, 9, can grasp the loss of the Queen, but their younger children, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, have more trouble understanding.
