Unidentified attackers fatally shot a prominent female journalist in Afghanistan.

Two men on a motorcycle approached Mena Mangal on Saturday morning while she was waiting for a car on her way to work, witnesses told US broadcaster RFE/RL.

A gunman allegedly fired four shots in the air to scare off people in a market, then shot Mangal twice in the chest.

Family members were quoted as saying Mangal was heading to her job as a cultural advisor to Afghanistan’s lower house of parliament.

Mangal also worked more than 10 years as a TV presenter and ran popular social media pages focused on the rights of Afghan women to work, RFE/RL reported. Her content included discussions on Afghan girls’ rights to go to school.

Mangal recently made social media posts informing followers she was getting death threats, according to RFE/RL.
