Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong formed a human chain in their latest demonstration on Friday, which organizers hope will span 25 miles long.

Organizers dubbed the protest “The Hong Kong Way” — a nod to a historic 1989 human chain protest carried out by Baltic states opposing Soviet control.

“The Baltic Way” demonstration featured an astounding 370-mile-long human chain.

Protesters on Friday lined the streets of Hong Kong and part of the city’s waterfront, raising linked hands and flashing their cellphone lights in a show of solidarity.

The Hong Kong protests began 11 weeks ago and first targeted the controversial and since-suspended extradition bill, which would have enabled the country’s criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China for trial.

The largely peaceful demonstrations have had instances of violence, with the protesters sometimes clashing with police. Protesters have since called for an investigation into police brutality.
