Is ‘The Crown’ based on true events? The real stories behind Queen Elizabeth’s most dramatic moments

By Chuck Arnold

Commoners around the world may have never gotten to know the real Queen Elizabeth II in her 70-year rule before her death on Thursday.

But Emmy-winning Netflix hit “The Crown” has given us some insight into the monarch who has been portrayed in the series by Claire Foy, Olivia Colman and now Imelda Staunton. Still, the show has employed a fair amount of creative license in taking us behind the walls of Buckingham Palace and across the history of the late queen’s reign.

In fact, series creator Peter Morgan has admitted that he has “made up” scenes, while one Palace source has accused the show of “trolling on a Hollywood budget.

Did a man named Michael Fagan (Tom Brooke) really hop into bed with the Queen (Olivia Colman)?

Still, “The Crown” — which will return in November with its fifth season — had enough respect for the Queen to have a plan in place in the event of her death: The series shut down production for at least a week while filming Season 6, due out in 2023.

Until the royal family is back in all of its streaming splendor on “The Crown,” we break down how much was fact versus fiction in reference to Queen Elizabeth II’s most memorable moments.

By Jesse O’Neill

A British Airways pilot was recorded breaking the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death in a mid-flight announcement to passengers — eliciting an emotional response from some onboard.

The somber message was delivered on the tail end of a Thursday trip from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Heathrow Airport in London, the video clip showed.

“Elizabeth, the queen, passed away earlier today with her family by her side,” the pilot was heard announcing in the video shared by Laerke Christensen.

“I thought I should at least tell you that before you arrive at the terminal,” he stoically continued as a crew member dabbed his eyes with a napkin.

The surge comes amid an economic crisis in the UK as the British pound sunk to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Queen Elizabeth died Thursday at her Scottish summer residence Balmoral Castle at age 96 and was the nation’s longest-reigning monarch, serving an unprecedented 70 years.

Her 73-year-old son immediately became King Charles III, while his wife Camilla became Queen Consort.

Sex Pistols' frontman John Lydon paid an ironic tribute to Queen Elizabeth on Friday.

The legendary punk rock band notoriously created the 1977 single "God Save the Queen," a song that confronted Britons being submissive to the British monarchy.

The hit was released on the Queen's Silver Jubilee. The song was so controversial that it was banned by the BBC, but the track reached the top of UK's NME charts.

"Send her victorious," Lydon said bluntly on Twitter.

Queen Elizabeth as a mother: Inside her ‘devoted,’ yet ‘old-fashioned’ parenting

By Nicki Gostin

Queen Elizabeth II held many titles over the course of her 70 years on the throne, but the one of “mother” was often overshadowed by her duty to the crown.

Royal expert Robert Hardman describes the late Queen as a “devoted” — albeit “old-fashioned” — mother to her four children, whom she shared with Prince Philip.

“I think there’s a tendency among some people to sort of apply the norms of modern parenting to the way she brought up her children,” the author of “Queen of Our Times: The Life of Elizabeth II” explained to Page Six of parenting criticism the monarch received over the years.

Paul McCartney pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth's 'fabulous sense of humor'

Paul McCartney, 80, recalled the handful of times he was able to interact with late Queen Elizabeth II throughout his life.

McCartney told fans in a post on his website about the Queen's "fabulous sense of humor" throughout the years and about the time he was knighted and other events involving the arts.

"Looking back I am honored and amazed to see that I met Her Majesty eight or nine times and each time she impressed me with her great sense of humor combined with great dignity," McCartney said.

Prince Edward recalls Queen Elizabeth's 'jaw-dropping' 2012 Olympic Games moment

Prince Edward said his mother's introduction at the 2012 Olympic Games was "probably the most jaw-dropping moment in any film or television production."

Queen Elizabeth II appeared alongside Daniel Craig, who was playing his signature character of James Bond, during the London Olympics' opening ceremony.

The Earl of Wessex recalled everyone had been asking who would be playing the Queen and the reaction to seeing the monarch herself appear in the introduction shocked the audience.

"The fact that my mother kept it to herself and the team that were there and didn't tell anybody was just brilliant," Prince Edward said.

Royal family yanks Queen’s garden house from Airbnb after death

By Mary Jacob

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday — and an ill-timed press announcement promoting an Airbnb listing on royal grounds sent out by email early that day — the royal family has taken down the listing for the short-term stay, The Post has learned.

Before Queen Elizabeth’s passing, the garden house on her Sandringham Estate was listed on the popular vacation rental site, and had already been booked by guests through February 2024.

The property is part of the 600-acre estate that traditionally served as site of the royal family’s Christmas celebrations.

That said, Sandringham Castle is most famously known as the place where the Queen gave her annual Christmas broadcast.

The royal family, along with boutique holiday cottage agency Norfolk Hideaways, initially listed the property for rent in 2019. Serving as the former home of Queen Elizabeth’s head gardener, it most recently made its way back on the rental market on Wednesday — a day before the Queen died.
