RICHMOND, Va. — Millions of smokers desperate to quit can safely use over-the counter nicotine gum, patches and lozenges longer than recommended, the Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.

Current labels suggest that consumers stop smoking and using other products that contain nicotine when they employ aids designed to help them quit. Smokers are also currently advised to use nicotine-replacement products for no longer than 12 weeks.
