Pantastic!
A zoo in China has welcomed what is believed to be the world’s first known set of panda triplets.
Juxiao, the mama panda, delivered the rare trio at Guangzhou’s Chimelong Safari Park last month, but was unable to care for them at first due to exhaustion, the Guardian reports.
The zoo announced Tuesday that she has now regained her strength after the four-hour delivery and has been reunited with her newborn triplets.
“It was a miracle for us and [the births] exceeded our expectations,” zoo general manager Dong Guixin said.
“It’s been 15 days. They have lived longer than any other triplets so far.”
The adorable baby pandas have not yet been named and their genders will not be determined until they are older.
Since the cubs are still alive, they are technically being considered the world’s only surviving panda triplets, but an official from China’s foremost authority on pandas warned the zoo not to rush to conclusions.
“We can only say they are surviving once they reach 6 months,” said a Sichuan Wolong National Nature Reserve official known as Ms. Zhao.
“For now they are indeed the only surviving triplets.”
Mortality rates among pandas are extremely high and the only other case of triplets being born ended up dying three days later from a bladder disorder, according to the Guardian.
“The triplets can be described as a new wonder of the world,” the zoo said in a statement.
