The head of the House Oversight Committee is demanding more information from the Trump-appointed prosecutor behind Hunter Biden’s cushy plea deal — telling him to either brief the panel in person or submit a written explanation.
Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) told Axios on Tuesday that he hoped Delaware US Attorney David Weiss would explain “what he means when he says” the investigation into the first son is “ongoing.”
“If [Weiss] can tell us that via mail or briefing, that would be better,” Comer told the outlet.
“Preferably for time’s sake he could give us a briefing … I don’t think that’s asking too much.”
In an interview with CBS News Tuesday, Comer suggested Weiss could be made to testify before either his committee or the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

After a five-year investigation, Weiss’ office announced Tuesday that Hunter, 53, will plead guilty to federal tax and firearms charges in exchange for no jail time and a felony-free criminal record.
Comer quickly joined a chorus of Republican critics blasting the agreement as a “sweetheart plea deal.”

“Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling and possibly bribery.”
Later, Weiss clarified that the investigation into Hunter’s alleged illicit activities was “ongoing” — which could allow federal authorities to refuse to supply documents to House Republicans.

“My guess would be that they will continue to probe, just to sort of make sure they have got all the loose ends already captured and tied up,” he said. “But whether they will find more, it doesn’t seem to be highly likely.”
“Certainly new charges could be brought, but they would have to be brought on the basis of new evidence,” Hockett added. “Once a judge approves the deal and it’s finalized, then no additional charges can be brought later on the basis of the evidentiary record that we currently have.”
Comer demanded more information on what Weiss meant when he said the investigation was “ongoing.” APPresident Biden’s younger son is set to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges of failing to pay federal income taxes, Weiss stated.
Charging documents alleged that Hunter failed to report substantial income from countries like Ukraine and China, and did not pay at least $100,000 in income taxes in 2017 and 2018, when he received at least $3 million in taxable income.
He is also expected to enroll in a pretrial diversion agreement on a felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user after he lied about his substance abuse on a gun purchase form in October 2018.
As part of the deal, Hunter is expected to avoid jail time and a felony charge. APWhile the two tax charges carry maximum sentences of 12 months each in addition to 10 years’ incarceration for the gun charge, insiders say Hunter will likely skate with probation on all three counts.
He is also avoiding other potential charges, including working as an unregistered lobbyist in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act and money laundering.
The plea deal was struck as the House Oversight Committee continues to probe claims that Hunter and Joe Biden each accepted $5 million in bribes from the owner of the Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma Holdings, where Hunter served on the board between 2014 and 2019.
On Tuesday, Comer accused the FBI of heavily redacting two 2017 informant files in the investigation.
“[It was] a total waste of my time,” Comer griped about the FD-1023 files provided by the FBI at a secure reading room at the Capitol.
“I need to know what the US attorney meant by this is an ‘ongoing’ investigation because the reason the FBI and the Treasury Department won’t give me all of the evidence of wrongdoing by the Bidens is because they say it is part of an ongoing investigation,” he added to reporters, referring to Weiss’ comment about the status of Hunter’s plea deal.
“So is it a real ongoing investigation or is this just an attempt to obstruct and block our committee from providing oversight? That’s a very important line in what [Weiss] presented to the American people today and nobody knows what that means.”
Comer claimed last month to have identified nine Biden family members who allegedly received income from heavyweights in China and Romania.
President Biden, in California on a trip that included several re-election campaign fundraising events, told reporters Tuesday that he was “very proud of my son” when asked if he had spoken to Hunter that day.
