A scientist at an isolated Antarctica base allegedly assaulted and sexually harassed colleagues while the team is confined together at the edge of the Earth for a year, according to a shocking new report.
The researcher’s “deeply disturbing” behavior was shared in an email by a fellow team member who was cooped up with him in the SANAE IV base, home to a South African research team.
Inhospitable weather has made it too difficult to evacuate anyone from SANAE IV, meaning everyone is stuck together for the foreseeable future, according to authorities.
A member of a South African research team that is confined for more than a year at an isolated Antarctica base was put under psychological evaluation there, government officials said. ZUMAPRESS.com“His behavior has escalated to a point that is deeply disturbing. I remain deeply concerned about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victim,” the email said, as first reported on by South Africa’s Sunday Times newspaper.
The scientist also made death threats to others, created “an environment of fear and intimidation,” and sexually assaulted a fellow researcher, the letter alleged.
“His behavior has become increasingly egregious, and I am experiencing significant difficulty in feeling secure in his presence,” the letter said. “It is imperative that immediate action is taken to ensure my safety and the safety of all employees.”
The alleged assault on the base’s leader was first reported on Feb. 27, and officials and counselors intervened remotely “to mediate and restore relationships at the base,” South Africa’s Ministry of Environment, which oversees the research missions, said in a statement Monday night.
Officials are in contact with team members almost daily, officials said.
The researcher allegedly assaulted and sexually harassed colleagues, according to officials. ZUMAPRESS.com“The alleged perpetrator has willingly participated in further psychological evaluation, has shown remorse and is willingly cooperative,” the ministry added, saying that the scientist had written a formal apology to the victim.
A team of just nine people, including scientists, engineers, and a doctor, are living alone on the base for around 13 months until next year, authorities said.
The isolated base is located on a cliff in Queen Maud Land, surrounded by a glacial ice sheet, almost 2,500 miles from South Africa.
“The alleged perpetrator has willingly participated in further psychological evaluation, has shown remorse, and is willingly cooperative,” the South Africa’s Ministry of Environment said. ZUMAPRESS.comTheir next direct contact with the outside world won’t be until December, when a supply ship is planned to visit the base, according to the South African National Antarctic Program.
It takes 10 days for the ship to travel from Cape Town to Antarctica.
Before that, the team must face the brutal Antarctic winter, in which, from June, the continent will be in darkness for six entire months.
South Africa’s Ministry of Environment said in a statement that the alleged assault on the base leader was reported on Feb. 27, and officials and counselors intervened remotely “to mediate and restore relationships at the base.” ZUMAPRESS.comTemperatures plummet to -9 while winds can reach 135 mph, making leaving the base all but impossible.
Ahead of facing the “extreme nature of the environment in Antarctica,” all team members must undergo psychological evaluations, the Ministry of the Environment said.
No problems were identified in the alleged perpetrator before the mission started, it said.
“It is not uncommon that once individuals arrive at the extremely remote areas where the scientific bases are located, an initial adjustment to the environment is required,” the Ministry said in a statement to the Sunday Times.
