A 15-month-old Rhode Island girl was fatally mauled by a family dog as relatives tried in vain to save her, police said.
The horrific incident occurred Friday at the home of the girl’s grandparents during a backyard lunch, NBC news reported.
Two adult relatives were injured when they tried to stop the dog, a “pit-bull breed,” police said.
Police responding to a 911 call found the child bitten several times and immediately attempted life-saving procedures, they said in a statement.
The toddler was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, where she was pronounced dead.
The dog, which was contained in the backyard, has been euthanized, police said.
