Russia and China have proposed a deal to halt North Korea’s weapons program that would require the US to stop the deployment of a missile shield in South Korea and end military exercises with the country, the Russian foreign ministry said Tuesday.

The statement, released after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Kremlin, comes after North Korea said it successfully launched a inter-continental ballistic missile capable of hitting Alaska.

Moscow and Beijing want the US to halt use of the THAAD anti-missile defense system in South Korea, which Washington says is needed because of the threat of attack by North Korea.
