Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov astonishingly claimed on Thursday that Russia “didn’t attack Ukraine” and dismissed the global outrage over the Mariupol maternity hospital bombing as “pathetic outcry.”

Speaking in Turkey after peace talks with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba failed, Lavrov repeated his previous assertions that Russian forces never invaded its neighbor.

“We are not planning to attack other countries. We didn’t attack Ukraine in the first place,” the gaslighting Lavrov said.

He insisted the invasion launched two weeks ago was a “special military operation” and it was the result of “a direct threat to the safety and security of the Russian Federation.”

Lavrov also claimed that Russia’s deadly attack on a maternity hospital in the besieged city of Mariupol on Wednesday was lies and propaganda.

“It is not the first time we have seen pathetic outcries concerning the so-called atrocities perpetrated by the Russian military,” he said.

The foreign minister claimed the hospital wasn’t treating patients and had long been used as a “base for extremists.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov also earlier denied the Russian military struck the hospital.

He claimed that the explosions that ravaged the building were caused by explosive devices planted nearby in what he described as a “staged provocation to incite anti-Russian agitation in the West.”

Lavrov’s Ukrainian counterpart said their discussions did not yield any progress because Russia was still seeking “surrender from Ukraine.”

“This is not what they are going to get,” Kuleba said, adding he was willing to continue the dialogue.
