Russian officials on Wednesday called for “a quartet” of international mediators to intervene and diffuse escalating fighting between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militants.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking after meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the meeting is “the most acute task now” to resolve the growing conflict that has killed dozens over the past three days, according to reports.
The four mediators consist of Russia, the US, the European Union and the United Nations.
“Today I think we have reached the common denominator that the most pressing issue is to convene the international mediators’ quartet… at the earliest opportunity,” Lavrov said in a joint statement with Guterres, The Hill reported.
Lavrov said the meeting would be “at the level of foreign ministers.”

The announcement comes as President Joe Biden on Wednesday said he had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reaffirm US support for the Jewish State.
“My expectation and hope is that this will be closing down sooner than later,” Biden said. “But Israel has a right to defend itself against thousands of rockets flying into your territory.”
