“Salt mom” Lacey Spears continued to administer lethal doses of sodium to her 5-year-old son even after doctors at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital called police and told staff not to leave her alone with her sickly child, a new state fatality report suggests.

The report, obtained by The Journal News through FOIL requests, found that Garnett Spears’s sodium level spiked to a life-threatening 188 milliequivalents per liter on Jan. 22 and that “it was medically impossible for the levels to do so without the subject child ingesting an unknown substance.”

The boy had already been poisoned several times through a feeding tube connected to his stomach, starting in his home in Chestnut Ridge’s Fellowship Community and continuing after he was taken to Nyack Hospital in mid-January, authorities say. But the report suggests the poisoning continued even after he was flown to Maria Fareri, where a doctor immediately and sternly confronted the mom in the hallway, telling her Jan. 20 it was “medically impossible” for her son’s sodium level to have spiked to such levels at Nyack Hospital.

The medical staff at Maria Fareri was therefore put on notice to keep an eye out for the mom. The hospital called the state’s child-abuse hotline Jan. 21, prompting police to get involved. But none of this prevented her from allegedly finishing him off. He was declared dead Jan. 23.

His 26-year-old mother, who documented her son’s demise in excruciating detail and posted pictures of his lifeless body on Facebook, was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter five months later.

Another major revelation of the report is that Spears started threatening Garnett when he was just months old, stating aloud during one hospital visit that “she wanted to harm” Garnett.

Spears, on Twitter, stated that she’d taken Garnett to the hospital nearly two dozen times by his first birthday. Medical records show the boy experienced another unexplained sodium spike during one of those visits. During another stay at a Tennessee Hospital, he “suffered from bleeding through his eyes and ears with no known medical explanation,” according to the fatality report.

The report states that hospital staff, even in those days, suspected Spears was suffering from Munchausen by Proxy, a rare psychiatric disorder in which a parent intentionally harms a child.

Social services were called at that time, and again in Florida after the mother moved with her son to Clearwater. But no action was taken to remove the child from his home.

Authorities in Westchester suspect the mom of Munchausen by proxy syndrome, but it’s uncertain whether the issue will be part of a trial. Spears is currently on suicide watch at the Westchester County jail in Valhalla.
