NEWTOWN, Conn. — The home where mass murderer Adam Lanza killed his mother before massacring 20 children and six educators at the nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School has been torn down, officials said Tuesday.
After neighbors pleaded with town officials, the 3,100-square-foot house was demolished Monday, with plans to leave the two-acre lot on which it stood as open space.
“Not only is the property a constant reminder of the evil that resided there, those of us who walk, run, drive, ride or otherwise must pass it multiple times a day are having a hard time moving on,” neighbor Dave Ackert said in a statement.
The Dec. 20, 2012, rampage began with Adam killing his gun-enthusiast mom, Nancy, then driving to Sandy Hook.
The school massacre ended when he committed suicide as authorities were closing in.
The home’s foundation and driveway were all that stood on the lot Tuesday night. A town official said those, too, would be demolished to make way for greenery.
