Nanos made the bold claim during an interview with NBC News when asked if investigators are any closer to that major break in the case — even as he’s faced waves of scrutiny and criticism over his handling of the high-profile probe.

“I think the investigators are definitely closer,” he said. “We got a lot of intel, a lot of leads, but now it’s time to just go to work.”

Police release new details on backpack worn by Nancy Guthrie suspect in doorbell camera footage

By Kathleen Joyce

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos released new details on Nancy Guthrie's disappearance in an interview with NBC News.

Last month, authorities were given a "promising" lead after they found the backpack and gun holster a suspect in relation to Guthrie's disappearance was seen wearing in doorbell camera footage was sold at Walmart. However, authorities are stepping back on that claim.

Nanos said it's possible the suspect purchased the Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack somewhere else.

"We've now learned that maybe it wasn't purchased out of Walmart," he said.

"That backpack new, is exclusive to Walmart, but who's to say I didn't buy it and put it on eBay? … That's what we're looking at," he continued.

Authorities were able to obtain records of who purchased the backpack at the retailer.

The clothes the suspect was wearing have not been identified yet either but investigators were probing if they were bought at Walmart.

Man detained, then released after SWAT raid insists he did not take Nancy Guthrie

By Alex Oliveira

The man who was detained and then released after a SWAT raid on his Arizona home has denied having anything to do with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie in his first interview since the incident.

Luke Daley, 37, was held Feb. 13 but was quickly cut loose after questioning — and insists cops had the wrong man.

"It's not me," he told "True Crime Arizona" host Briana Whitney in an interview released Monday. "I have nothing to do with this case."

Daley's 77-year-old mother also was questioned as part of the cops' probe.

Speculation has swirled online that Daley — who has a felony record for numerous drug and weapons charges from as recently as 2022 — was the man seen wearing a mask and breaking into Nancy's home in security footage from the night she disappeared on Feb. 1.

But Daley said he didn't see the resemblance -- and urged people not to give into the "hive mind" furor of amateur online detectives.

"I, like everyone else, just want Nancy to come home and be safe,'' he said.

"But that being said, I have nothing to do with this case," he said, adding that he didn't know who was involved and would tell investigators if he did.

The crucial, digital clues Nancy Guthrie’s abductor may have left behind: forensic expert

By Kathleen Joyce

Nancy Guthrie’s abductor could be captured using crucial cellphone data — the same tactics law enforcement used in the Bryan Kohberger case, according to a forensic expert who analyzed the Idaho killer’s phone.

“You have to know what normal is to find evil, and this person’s phone would be considered the evil,” Heather Barnhart, an expert with Cellebrite and the SANS Institute who worked on the Kohberger case, told the Daily Mail.
