An Indiana superintendent quit her job after she was caught using her own insurance to pay for a sick student’s treatment, according to reports.
Casey Smitherman, the head of Elwood Community Schools, resigned Friday in light of the insurance fraud scandal, news station WXIN reported.
Smitherman admitted to authorities she pretended a student without insurance was her son in order to get him medical treatment. She was charged Jan. 23 with misconduct, insurance fraud, insurance application fraud and identity deception.
“I have dedicated my entire professional career to children and ensuring they have the best possible chance of success,” Smitherman said Friday in a statement. “My record of accomplishments clearly shows I have been successful in doing that. Unfortunately, my recent lapse in judgment has brought negative attention to the community and myself.”
Officials said Smitherman checked on the boy Jan. 9 at his home because she noticed he was absent from school.
She took him to a medical center but he was denied care because he didn’t have insurance. Smitherman then took him to a different clinic, where she admits she lied about his identity so physicians would see him.
The superintendent turned herself in to authorities Jan. 23 in connection with the incident.
“I’m not saying it was right; I’m really sorry. I just was scared for him,” Smitherman said, according to news station WLS-TV. “I would love to go back to that moment and redo it.”
