The manhunt for two fugitive murderers heated up in southwest New York on Saturday — with searchers pouring into the area after two men fitting the fugitives’ descriptions were seen walking along railroad tracks in rural Allegany County.
Local media reported that helicopters were circling over the town of Friendship, more than 300 miles southwest of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, where killers Richard Matt and David Sweat broke out June 6.
A resident reported seeing two men who looked like the escapees walking along train tracks near Interstate 86, according to the Olean Times Herald.
The caller told authorities the pair crawled into a pipe going under the highway, the paper reported.
ATVs and helicopters rushed to the area to search Friendship and the nearby towns of Belfast and Bolivar, the paper said.
The possible sighting was the first since last weekend, when two separate individuals spotted a pair of men who also fit the escapees’ description in Steuben County, near the Pennsylvania boundary.
But the witnesses had waited until Tuesday to tell authorities. Investigators have been scouring the area since then.
Meanwhile, a source told The Post that the Clinton facility guard who has been put on administrative leave for possibly aiding in the escape is veteran corrections officer Gene Palmer, 57.
Palmer, a shift supervisor, is “not talking to investigators,” the source added.
He has not been arrested pending a warrant search on his home in Cadyville, not far from the prison complex.
The news of a potential second staffer arrest had prison employees on edge Saturday.
Prison worker Joyce Mitchell, 51, was busted June 12 and charged with helping Matt and Sweat escape.
“You won’t catch me coming into work even 30 seconds late,’’ one officer told a visitor who spoke to The Post.
