Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa won reelection to a second term, according to a Fox News projection early Wednesday morning.
Ernst beat back a challenge from political newcomer Theresa Greenfield, a Democrat who outpaced Ernst in fundraising and topped most of the polls but whose support appeared to collapse in recent weeks.
Ernst was elected in 2014 after distinguishing herself with a memorable TV commercial in which she boasted, “I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm” and vowed to “make ’em squeal” in the nation’s capital.
Her second commercial was equally provocative, showing Ernst riding up on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and using a pistol to open fire at a target range as a narrator predicted that “when she sets her sights on Obamacare, Joni’s going to unload.”
A staunch ally of President Trump’s, Ernst was rewarded with a virtual appearance during Day 3 of this year’s Republican National Convention.
She was featured in a video praising Iowa farmers for their response to a devastating windstorm, as well as the president for having the president for having “quickly signed an emergency declaration for Iowa to provide relief.”
But during the last of three debates with Greenfield, Ernst incorrectly answered a question about the break-even price of soybeans after her opponent nailed the break-even price of corn.
About two-thirds of the polls since April showed Greenfield — who raked in $28.7 million during the third quarter of 2020, four times the $7.2 raised by Ernst during the same time — leading the closely watched race.
But although Greenfield’s advantage reached 12 percentage points in late September, the most recent Real Clear Politics average put Ernst ahead by a narrow 1.4 points.
