An Arizona senator called Rep. Steve Scalise’s wife Wednesday morning to tell her that her husband had been shot, because he didn’t “want her to wake up and hear the news.”

Sen. Jeff Flake watched as Scalise was shot in the hip during GOP congressional baseball practice in Virginia and went out to the field to help the House Majority Whip.

“I got Steve Scalise’s phone and called his wife,” Flake said, according to The Hill. “I didn’t want her to wake up and hear the news, not know what was going on.”

Flake said Scalise was “coherent the whole time” after being shot.
