An Arizona senator recalled the horrifying moment he realized a gunman had opened fire Wednesday morning on him and other politicians during a congressional baseball practice in Virginia.

“All of a sudden, we heard a loud shot. Everyone thought it sounds like a gun and the gunman was by the third-base dugout with a clear view of the field and everyone on it,” Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) told CNN.

Rep. Steve Scalise was on third base when he was shot but was able to drag himself 10 to 15 yards along the field, Flake said.

“He was coherent the whole time, he laid out there [on the field] for at least 10 minutes,” Flake said. “I ran out to Steve and started putting pressure [on the wound].”

He added: “I just remember seeing some gravel bounce off as the shots were coming near us. So we climbed into the dugout.”
